All-female comedy festival BONERAMA starts tonight

This Thursday through Saturday, the Philly Improv Theater will present the first-ever all-female comedy festival in the city by the name of "Bonerama." It's the brainchild of Alexis Simpson, Artistic Director of PHIT (member of Illegal Refill and Rare Bird Show), Meg Favreau, Managing Director of PHIT (stand-up comic and one half of Meg & Rob) and Tabitha Vidaurri (of The Sixth Borough) and will feature some of the best female improv, sketch and stand-up comedians that Philadelphia has to offer. We recently took a moment to chat with Alexis about the fest.

Why a female comedy festival?
Tabitha and Meg were actually planning on doing an all-female comedian show. I know people like Karen[Getz] and Kelly [Jennings] of from Cecily and Gwendolyn have done it before and it's always a good thing. It really does celebrate the underdog in a boys' club and when they emailed me I said, “yeah that's a really good idea, why book just one show when we have a lot of really awesome female improvisers that can make a three-day weekend out of it?”

Do you see it as an opportunity for these performers to do something different?
I think that BWP and Cecily and Gwendolyn are two-women improv groups that probably won't do anything different and will just do their show which is great, but I think the most different thing will be what Amie Roe (of Illegal Refill) came up with, “Real Housewives of Philadelphia.” It's going to be a chance to see some improvisers do something really different. And the cabaret-style show, “The Bonerama Variety Hour”, which is what Meg and Tabitha originally planned, is a really good chance for people to experiment and maybe go outside of their comfort zone.

“The Real Housewives...” seems to be something ripe for parody...
It writes itself. I'm addicted to the show, I think it's amazing. I got hooked on the New York one. I just love watching these self-important, completely delusional women. They're rich, fine, great, and some of the women on that show actually made their own money and that's cool, but they're delusional and sick and there's so much drama that doesn't matter. Someone was asking me about it and I said “this is what happens when you don't have bigger problems to worry about.” You get mad about who said what about you at the Gucci party because you don't care about paying your electric bill. We're taking little bits and pieces from all of them. Liz Scott (half of BWP) is thinking of challenging herself to speak in only lines from the show. They're great characters, it's just fun to play awful people.

Do you think that these female performers have been limited in what they usually do on stage?
I don't think I've thought of it that way, but I guess that's the way it is. I do think when I watch a lot of comedy, and it goes back to why I feel good about this festival, is that I really feel that women are put into roles by men and allow themselves to be put into roles by men in which they are playing either the wife, the girlfriend or some slut. I've seen a lot of sketches written that way, I've seen a lot of improv sets go that way and I think “come on, do something else!” I do think that I've seen bits here and there that are different. Tabitha and Meg write really great roles for women. And there might be some other women involved that would like to do something more experimental in a show that is just for them.

You can see that limitation in movies too, I'd say...
Yeah, there's some hot girl that they want and usually she's hotter than the guys that's she's dating. I hear The Hangover was a great movie but the girl has the same ten lines like “Where's the groom? If you don't get the groom here I'll be a bitch!” And I see it too if they are not the hot girl that isn't very interesting, they're the crazy chick that's kind of funny.

How does Philly compare to other cities as far as female characters?
I think within the larger context, I think Philly has a really strong driving community and I feel like everytime I turn around I'm meeting more comedians. I feel like New York has some amazing female comedians. I will say, I went to L.A. and [female comedians] are there, but some of the women I saw were in the shadows. I played there and it seemed like they were surprised that a woman could be confident and in the forefront. I thought “Really, this is L.A.! This is a big town.” You see it exploding on the national scene though, so I don't think we're too far behind. I just don't how many other cities are women really in charge where they are running their own companies. And you see Tabitha running The Sixth Borough and Meg being half of a sketch duo that's very prolific and talented...I don't know how much that happens other places.

BONERAMA starts tonight and runs through Saturday. Visit PHIT's website for ticket information.

Kids In The Hall tour, will play Philadelphia

Via The Sound of Young America blog:

From the press release:

The 2008 tour, titled “Live As We’ll Ever Be”, represents a new era in the troupe’s collaboration, and is comprised of completely fresh material which simultaneously reflects who they are now and their patently off-kilter take on ordinary life. Favorite characters from the television series appear in entirely new situations, sharing the stage with new KITH personas which are destined for the same level of cult adoration. In a world where most entertainment tries to play it safe, “The Kids in the Hall” steadfastly refuse to follow the trend, preferring instead to slaughter sacred cows and look at the world – and each other – with refreshing honesty.

Join The Kathies, Headcrusher, the Sales Guys, Buddy Cole, and people you’ve never met before (but somehow recognize from your everyday life) on an adventure into the bizarre and side-splittingly funny.

RECAP: Bedtime Stories, 1/9

This month's Bedtime Stories at the Shubin Theatre was a marathon affair with 16 acts of sketch, stand-up and monologues based around the theme of politics. Highlights:

- Roger Weaver started out the show with, of course, political jokes. He took shots at William Howard Taft, Ross Perot and finally as he got more contemporary, our wonderful current president. He stressed that we should go to the National Constitution Center although "the problem with the framers of the constitution is that they had such a pre-9/11 worldview".

- Matt Lally and David Terruso of Animosity Pierre performed a mayoral debate between Jim Jimelson (sp?) and Jim Jimelson with a shocking ending.

- Pat Kelly played a stay-at-home dad trying to do political humor like the late, great Bill Hicks.

- It was around this time that the host, Gregg Gethard, had ballots passed out. Being "major proponents of democracy", the audience was allowed to vote on what next month's theme would be: GIRLS GONE WILD, A TRIBUTE TO ALYCIA LANE or FUCK COMCAST. GIRLS GONE WILD won by a narrow margin.

- Chris Morganti as Dennis Miller moderated a 3rd party presidential debate between local stand-up comics John Kensil and Mike Rainey with some dead-on hilarious asides:

"Everyone here knows you guys have enough chance of winning this election as Paris Hilton has of discovering the Unified Field Theory, alright?"

"Bush refused to fund stem cell research, which made him look like some kind of Tyler Durden Neo-Luddite, right? But he also said that we are going to the moon. Which is great because we'll get there five years after the Chinese. Which is great because the first thing you want after a long journey is a number two combination plate with egg roll, right?"

- The Ultimate Warrior (Gregg Gethard), former WWF Intercontinental Champion and political pundit, read a transcript from a Rush Limbaugh's radio show as well as talked trash on "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig.

- Secret Pants performed a sketch about an unique way to bring people into a struggling town.

- A 7th grader from St. Rose of Lima in North Wales, Little Miss Jaime Fountaine, read her speech for re-election as class treasurer that detailed her successes, controversies and the backhanded politics of middle school government.

- Blaze Brewster discussed who would win the presidential election if decided by physical competition in the Thunderdome.

- Meg & Rob performed a sketch as a romantic couple that write signing statements for their date, just like President Bush does for congressional bills.

- Councilman Kent Haines read the minutes from last week's town council meeting where "allegations were made, feelings were hurt and several members of the town council were seen weeping."

- And Don Montrey, host of Die, Actor, Die! (next show is the 21st at The Khyber), told some jokes that he wrote for the political show This Is The Week That Is.

The show was awfully long at two and a half hours, but then again you're also getting a bang for your buck ($5). The next show is Wednesday, February 6th and the theme is GIRLS GONE WILD, A TRIBUTE TO ALYCIA LANE.

COMING UP LATER THIS WEEK:
- Video from Bedtime Stories at the Shubin Theatre
- An interview with local comic Anton Shuford
- The Top 5 Stand-Up Albums of 2007
- Dana Gould at Helium
- Another Classic Bit
- Maybe some more stuff!

Die, Actor, Die!: Meg & Rob

Die, Actor, Die! week continues with sketch comedy from Meg & Rob. They performed two sketches that night and I (slightly) like this one more. I especially love how it isn't about much at all.

You'll be hearing and seeing a lot more of Meg & Rob in the future. They perform at Bedtime Stories and they recently performed their show "Reviving the Lecture Circuit" again.

Special thanks to local comic Kent Haines for helping film this.

Coming up tomorrow: Magic! Yes, magic!

Lebron James, the closest I've had to a basketball hero (I've been a fan of The Cleve' teams since birth, long story), will be hosting the premiere of the 32nd season of Saturday Night Live....uh, tomorrow. Fellow Roc-A-Fella family member Kanye West is the musical guest.

I suspect that Peyton Manning's successful hosting spot during last season will open the floodgates of athletes that think they can be funny on the small screen. The recent Jon Runyan commercials are a perfect example. Runyan must have been thinking as he watched Manning during the Super Bowl, "hey, I'm 6' 7" 330 pound right tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, I block for guys like Manning, why can't I be in a few commercials?" And why not, I suppose.

For Lebron its all part of his plan to become the first billionaire athlete. He has to be able to do everything, even comedy. But is he really funny? Let's review a few clips:

A wig is not always funny and this whole performance isn't either. But this illustrates how athletes always get the benefit of the doubt. If the guy makes a living hitting a small ball with a stick over 400 feet, almost ANYTHING besides that will be seen as funny. Also, we already like most athletes because if they are popular they are usually performing at the highest level in their sport. When they hit the stage you already have a history with them and anything beyond the dunking he usually does is gravy. Even if it's just wearing Hammer pants and singing out of key.

I've got to give him credit for his one, dunking a baby on national television is sort of gutsy (which isn't saying much for the rest of television, sure). Especially only a month after his girlfriend gave birth to his second child. He drew a lot of heat for this and he probably knew it would, but he did it anyways.

Ok, this whole thing sucks. And it's definitely not his fault. Did someone actually get paid to write and animate this? Bill Simmons wasn't a part of this, was he? I hope not. Horrible. But again, it plays off the "athletes not playing sports? OMG that's craaaazy! LOL!!!" aspect.

I've got to admit, Lebron is hilarious in his "The Lebrons" Nike commercials. A+ in my book. Can't wait for more, and there will be more. Greg Oden's injury guarantees this (agh, low blow, sorry).

So how's Lebron going to do on SNL? Loren Michaels, creator and executive producer of the show thinks he's going to be fine. In this phone interview, Michael talks about how athletes work well on the show because "they're used to being in front of a large group of people and not knowing how it's going to turn out" and because they are generally fearless. He'll be ok. The writers are good enough to make him funny and the others on stage wil always be there if he screws up. The cast has been solid the last few years, actually, and there haven't been enough stories about how the show is back.

Perhaps I'll live-blog the show if I don't have anything going on on a Saturday night. So yes, I will most likely be live-blogging the show.

SIDENOTE: Long gone are the late 80s when an athlete like Joe Montana or Wayne Gretzky would make a cameo and basically just grin the whole time. Sometimes they would only come out for one sketch and it was unexpected so the crowd would go nuts: "OMG, I'm in the same room as a Super Bowl champion quarterback! I watch him every Sunday!" All they had was smile, smile, smile until the applause died down, deliver their one line very awkwardly and smile some more. I kind of miss those days, really.
